Narrow your choices to the top three or so colleges in which you are most interested, and contact admissions offices to schedule campus visits.

Begin your search for private scholarships.

October/November

Apply for admission to the colleges in which you are most interested.

Obtain financial aid information from those colleges; carefully review the information explaining available aid, application procedures and deadline dates.

Continue your search for private scholarships.

Attend college fairs and financial aid information nights. Most are held on evenings and weekends to accommodate students and parents.

December/January

Continue to apply for admission to the colleges in which you are most interested.

Attend college fairs and financial aid information nights.

Obtain the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from high school guidance counselor, college financial aid office or on the Web located at www.fafsa.ed.qov.

Assemble family W-2's and initiate completion of federal tax returns used in completing the FAFSA.

February/March

If not already done, obtain the Free Application for Federal Student Aid from high school counselor, financial aid office, or on the Web.

If you have not yet done so, assemble family W-2's and initiate completion of federal tax returns to complete the FAFSA.

Watch for financial application deadlines.

Promptly respond to requests for information from college admissions and financial aid offices.

Review your financial aid award from the colleges to which you have applied for financial aid. Your package may include various forms of assistance, including student loans.

April/May

Review your financial aid awards from the colleges to which you have applied for financial aid.

Make your final decision on college attendance and notify the appropriate admissions office. If you applied to multiple colleges, notify them of your plan to attend college elsewhere.

Promptly respond to requests for information from the college admissions and financial aid office at your chosen college.

Pay required deposits for enrollment and/or residence hall.

June/July/August

Request final high school transcripts to be sent to your college of choice.

Promptly respond to any requests for information from your college admissions and financial aid offices.

Call admissions office to verify that all needed information is complete.

Attend orientation program when offered.

Pre-register for classes. Pay required deposits for enrollment and/or residence hall.

Complete your budget for the academic year.
